Pen Drawing in German (Week 4) – Typografisches

By Walter Freiberg

This week was all about fonts and typographies. Small fonts, big fonts, some bold, others light. This is going to be useful to write more creative jar labels and take notes differently πŸ˜€. I believe there’s a big difference between creating lots of typefaces (just one letter), and doing a whole set (all letters) and using it to write something. In any case, I think the latter is the real challenge.

It would be cool to get more practice in creating my own typography and using it consistently to write something. I might even use to keep a journal in German. And maybe add some doodles here and there? That could be a great way of putting together pen drawing + German, right? I think so! Actually, I started taking some notes in German with little doodles. I expect to share some of that here soon πŸ™ƒ.

On Days 23 and 24 I finished the Tierwahnsinn (the animal madness!). From Days 24 to 29 I worked on fonts. Before working on that I draw a grid (added vertical lines to the lined paper). During the first three days, I did a mix of the author’s typefaces and created others myself. I changed the hidden messages. One of them is Friede. The other is sei frei. Do you know what they mean? 😊

The proportions and the balance are still the biggest challenges, by far. It’s hard to get the right sizes, and even harder to get the right/left or top/bottom proportion exactly as I want (or even, relatively close πŸ˜…). But this is a learning process. I try to get better bit by bit, day in, day out. I think this is the best of doing something every day for a long period of time.

Week 4 Drawings

Below you can find the daily drawings. Each day, I’m practicing for an hour. Sometimes, I fill one or two pages. But there are days when I work on more detailed stuff, and maybe it’s just half a page πŸ™ƒ. As soon as I reach the one-hour mark, I put the pen down and take the photo of the day. New Vocabulary & Listening

I added 23 new notes (spread across seven cards) to my Anki deck, based on new words and expressions used in the current sections of the Kuli Kunst ebook. I continue using the same card formats as before and listening pretty much to the same type of content (music or podcasts).

That’s all for now! πŸ˜Š
